On For One More Day

Life is always full of disappointments.

After being in a slump for a long time, Charlie decided to commit suicide to end his pain. Unexpectedly, his mother appeared, and he spent a day with her.

This day seemed like an ordinary one. They went to cut someone’s hair, put on makeup for Miss Thelma, and so on. Amid the plain narration, combined with Charlie’s own memories, he saw many things from his childhood that had been forgotten or overlooked.

Indeed, Charlie had been so focused on seeking his father’s love that he had neglected his mother’s love. It was only after his mother passed away that he realized how precious her love was. Since then, he had to face the twists and turns of life alone.

Unfortunately, what Charlie faced was only the spirit of his mother. The only thing he could change was himself.

That night, his mother took him to meet his father’s first wife, and she uttered the word “forgive”.

Regarding the grudges of the past, we don’t have the chance to get revenge or seek redress. What we can do now is to forgive. And the one we need to forgive is not others, but ourselves.

Charlie was lucky. He still had the opportunity to relive that day, to understand the past and himself better.

For us, as the mother in the book said:

Going back to something is harder than you think.
